Nares Expedition
circa 1875: Members of a British expedition to the Arctic, led by the Scottish explorer Sir George Strong Nares (1831 - 1915). Nares joined the navy in 1846 after training at the Royal Naval College and served as mate on his first voyage on board Resolute during its survey of the Arctic. He also served during the Crimea and took part in expeditions to Australia and the Mediterranean. Nares later revisited the Arctic and sailed through the Magellan Straits but is best remembered for commanding Challenger during her round-the-world trip to produce an oceanographic survey for the Admiralty and the Royal Society. The results of the voyage filled 50 volumes. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
