EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the aftermath of a baton charge during the general strike in Glasgow, January 1919. The tension that had been building up reached its peak on that fateful day known as Black Friday or the Battle of George Square. In this powerful image, police officers can be seen returning from their forceful encounter with protesters on North Frederick Street. The weariness etched on their faces is juxtaposed against the chaotic backdrop of an urban street. A large group of men and women stand together, united in their resistance against oppressive conditions. The scene is filled with raw emotion and defiance as people gather around a makeshift barricade made from crates, symbolizing their determination to fight for better working conditions and fair treatment. Each face tells a story - stories of hardship, resilience, and hope for change. Published originally in Illustrated London News on February 8th, 1919, this photograph by Hulton Archive has become an iconic representation of social unrest during that era. It serves as a reminder of the power individuals possess when they come together to challenge injustice. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to those turbulent days where ordinary citizens dared to raise their voices against inequality. This print stands as both a testament to our collective past struggles and an inspiration for future generations striving for justice and equality.
