Archimedes Principle, wood engraving, published in 1880

The Archimedes principle, formulated about 2000 years ago by the Greek scholar Archimedes of Syracuse that states that a body immersed in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. The principle applies to both floating and submerged bodies and to all fluids, i.e. liquids and gases. It explains not only the buoyancy of ships and other vessels in water but also the rise of a balloon in the air and the apparent loss of weight of objects underwater. EDITORS COMMENTS
This wood engraving, published in 1880, depicts Archimedes Principle - a groundbreaking concept formulated by the Greek scholar Archimedes of Syracuse around 2000 years ago. The principle states that when a body is immersed in a fluid, it experiences an upward force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. This remarkable discovery applies to both floating and submerged bodies across all types of fluids - be it liquids or gases. The image showcases the historical significance and scientific brilliance behind this principle. It beautifully illustrates various elements related to buoyancy, balance, and weight scale within an underwater setting. By understanding this principle, we can comprehend not only why ships and vessels float effortlessly on water but also how balloons rise in the air and objects seemingly lose their weight when submerged. This wood engraving serves as a visual representation of Archimedes' profound contribution to physics during the 19th century. Its intricate details highlight his meticulous observations and experimental approach towards unraveling nature's secrets. As we gaze upon this piece, we are transported back in time to witness one of history's greatest scientific breakthroughs unfold before our eyes. With its etched lines and expertly engraved imagery, this print captures both the artistry involved in creating such illustrations as well as the intellectual curiosity that drives human progress. It stands as a testament to Archimedes' enduring legacy while reminding us of our endless quest for knowledge about our world's fundamental principles.
