HRP7389305 The Waterloo Barracks, pre 1863 (photo) by Unknown Artist, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Waterloo Barracks from the south west. A soldier stands beside two large guns and a statue of the Duke of Wellington
The Duke of Wellington was Constable of the Tower of London from 1826 until 1853. The Waterloo Barracks was named after his greatest victory and when work began on the building of this vast new barracks, it was the Duke himself who laid the first stone. The Portland stone statue by Thomas Milnes (c1810-88) was moved to Woolwich Arsenal in 1863); Photo © Historic Royal Palaces.
