Lantern slide, World War One, Salonika (1914-1918), 1916.
The mountainous terrain of Macedonia was ideal for the deployment of mules and horses. The British Army used thousands of these animals to move its supplies, equipment and the wounded. During the war, the British Army treated its pack animals with greater care than ever before. Around 80 per cent of those treated by the Army Veterinary Corps were successfully returned to the front line.
