Sir Robert was the Governor-Generals agent in Baluchistan throughout the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880). His negotiations with the tribes along the vital supply lines between India and Kandahar, became particularly important after the Battle of Maiwand in July 1880 and during the British withdrawal. His approach was muscular. Attacked by Pathan tribesmen in 1880, he led an assault on their village and was shot through this hat. Remarkably, he survived.); © National Army Museum. © © National Army Museum / Bridgeman Images
