This chart shows the results of the first British state-sponsored expedition with a purely scientific purpose. Because the earth's magnetic field is not uniform and, as a result, the mariner's compass points either side of north to a variable degree depending on the ship's position. To make navigation safer, Halley made an extensive series of comparisons between compass readings and determinations of north by astronomical observation. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm).
