EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an illustration from the renowned medical treatise "Fasciculus Medicinae" by Jean de Ketham, published in Venice in 1495. Created by an anonymous Italian School artist from the 15th century, this coloured woodcut is a fascinating glimpse into the world of medicine during that era. The image depicts a scene filled with doctors and writers who were considered essential for the practice of medicine at the time. The central figure remains unidentified, but it is speculated that he may be related to Bartolomeo da Montagnana, a prominent doctor active in the early 15th century. Surrounded by shelves overflowing with books and manuscripts, these learned individuals are engrossed in their studies and discussions. Patients can be seen patiently waiting for treatment, highlighting both the importance of healthcare and society's reliance on these knowledgeable practitioners. The presence of influential figures such as Aristotle, Hippocrates, Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Al Razi (Rhazes), Yuhanna bin Masawayh (Mesue), Averroes (Ibn Rushd), among others further emphasizes the significance of this field throughout history. Preserved within Bibliotheque de la Faculte de Medecine in Paris, France; this artwork offers us a window into centuries-old medical knowledge and practices. Its intricate details and vibrant colors make it not only historically significant but also visually stunning.
