EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of Serbian postage stamps from 1897, beautifully rendered in vibrant colors through the technique of lithography. Created by an anonymous European School artist, this image is part of a series of illustrations depicting late 19th-century stamps from Serbia. Originally produced as promotional trade cards for Liebig, a renowned manufacturer of meat extract based in Uruguay's Fray Bentos region, these cards became highly sought-after collector's items. The stamps featured in this print offer a glimpse into Serbian culture and tradition with their intricate designs and traditional costumes worn by the female figures depicted on them. The attention to detail and artistic craftsmanship make these stamps not only functional but also visually stunning pieces of art. During the late 19th century, Liebig's meat extract gained popularity as a staple food item in European households and even played a significant role during World War II. This historical context adds depth to the significance of these postage stamps beyond their aesthetic appeal. Preserved within private collections today, this particular print allows us to appreciate both the artistic value and historical importance of these Serbian postage stamps. It serves as a reminder that even everyday objects like postal artifacts can hold immense cultural significance and provide insights into different periods in history.
