EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolitho print takes us back to the year 1095 AD, a significant time during the First Crusade. Created by an English School artist in the 20th century, this artwork is now part of a private collection. Originally featured on a cigarette card from that era, it offers us a glimpse into history. The image showcases a brave soldier adorned in armor, representing the valiant warriors who fought during this tumultuous period. The uniform and weaponry reflect the military might of England and Britain at that time. As we delve deeper into the scene, we can sense the tension and anticipation as soldiers from different European nations gather for battle. The print not only highlights English soldiers but also alludes to German forces present during this conflict. It provides insight into their culture and armaments while emphasizing their role in shaping European history. Intriguingly, amidst these male combat troops, there are hints of female soldiers serving alongside them - an uncommon sight for that era. This inclusion adds another layer of complexity to our understanding of warfare during this time. With its detailed depiction of armored clothing and traditional weaponry such as plate armor and defensive weapons, this artwork immerses us in an authentic representation of medieval military life. As we gaze upon this historical masterpiece captured by Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, we are transported back to one of Europe's most defining moments – where conflicts clashed and nations confronted each other on the battlefield.
