Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat, 1570
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by Simon de Myle that transports viewers to a mythical world filled with religious symbolism and fantastical creatures. The artist skillfully depicts the biblical tale of Noah's Ark, showcasing his intricate attention to detail in this Northern Renaissance masterpiece. The painting showcases the dramatic moment when the floodwaters have receded, revealing Mount Ararat as the resting place for Noah's Ark. Towering mountains provide a majestic backdrop while various species of animals, including elephants, giraffes, lions, and camels roam freely in this newfound wilderness. However, amidst the tranquility lies an underlying sense of violence and savagery. Lions are shown devouring their prey while griffins ravage other unfortunate creatures. This juxtaposition between beauty and brutality adds depth to the narrative. De Myle's composition highlights not only the diversity of wildlife but also mythological elements such as unicorns and griffins - creatures believed to be extinct or purely fictional at that time. Through these additions, he explores themes of salvation and prophetic intervention within Christian mythology. This remarkable artwork invites contemplation on humanity's relationship with nature and its capacity for both destruction and preservation. With its rich symbolism and masterful execution, "Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat" continues to captivate audiences centuries after its creation.
