EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment from the Book of Hours of Louis d Orleans, created by the talented artist Jean Colombe in 1469. The scene depicted is none other than David sending Uriah to his tragic demise. As we gaze upon this illuminated manuscript, we witness the deceitful act that unfolds before our eyes. Intricately detailed, the image showcases David seated on his throne, surrounded by loyal courtiers. With a letter in hand and an expression veiled with treachery, he commands a kneeling messenger to deliver it to Uriah. Clad in armor and standing tall, Uriah represents loyalty and honor as he prepares for battle at David's behest. The composition exudes medieval charm with its vibrant colors and delicate brushstrokes that bring every character to life. Bathsheba, wife of Uriah, watches from afar as her husband unknowingly walks towards his fate. Colombe's masterful craftsmanship shines through this piece as he skillfully captures the tension between loyalty and deception within one frame. This exquisite artwork now resides in the National Library of St. Petersburg, Russia. As we contemplate this mesmerizing print by Bridgeman Images, let us reflect on the timeless themes it portrays - betrayal disguised as duty and power corrupting even those deemed righteous.
