EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the powerful and intriguing figure of Muley Hazen, the Moorish king of Thunes. The portrait, created by an unknown artist in the 19th century, captures a significant moment in history when Hazen was stripped of his kingdom but later restored by Emperor Charles V. The image depicts a regal and dignified Hazen, his face displaying both strength and vulnerability. Dressed in traditional Tunisian attire, he stands tall with an air of resilience despite his tumultuous circumstances. His hand firmly grasps a sword, symbolizing his determination to reclaim what is rightfully his. The backdrop of Tunisia adds depth to this historical narrative. It serves as a reminder that North Africa has long been home to rich Arab civilizations and cultures that have shaped the region's identity over centuries. Photographer Leonard de Selva masterfully captures every intricate detail in this engraving-like photograph. From the folds in Hazen's clothing to the texture of his skin, each element contributes to telling a story filled with triumphs and challenges faced by this remarkable monarch.
