EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the title page of "Cleopatre Captive" a renowned play written by Etienne Jodelle in 1574. The engraving, created by an anonymous French artist from the 16th century, is housed in the prestigious Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France. The image features an intricate design that beautifully captures the essence of Cleopatra VII, the Egyptian queen who reigned from 69 to 30 BC. The text surrounding her portrait suggests that this piece served as an advertisement for the play, highlighting its poetic nature and historical significance. As we delve into this snapshot of history, it's fascinating to see how advertising techniques have evolved over time. This early form of advertizing demonstrates how even centuries ago, companies recognized the power of visual storytelling to attract audiences. Beyond its advertising purpose, this image also offers glimpses into daily life during that era. In particular, we can observe equestrianism and harness shops along Strand Street in London. It provides a glimpse into a bustling cityscape where saddlers and makers like Davis catered to horse enthusiasts. Overall, this print not only celebrates artistic mastery but also invites us on a journey through time – exploring ancient civilizations and witnessing how art has been used throughout history for both commercial purposes and cultural preservation.
