EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating painting captures a significant moment in history as Philip V of Spain bestows the prestigious honor of Cavalier of the Golden Fleece upon Marshal James Fitzjames, Duke of Berwick. Painted by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, this masterpiece showcases the grandeur and opulence of the royal court. Philip V, King of Spain during 1683-1746, is depicted in regal attire seated on his throne while conferring the esteemed award to Fitzjames. The duke, an illegitimate son of King James II of England and Arabella Churchill, had proven himself as a formidable military leader under Louis XIV's patronage. In this scene set after the Battle of Almansa in 1818, flags flutter proudly behind them as they stand before an audience at Palacio de Liria in Madrid. The atmosphere is filled with anticipation and admiration for both men who have demonstrated their loyalty and bravery. This painting not only symbolizes recognition and reward but also represents the intricate web that connects European royalty through alliances and bloodlines. It serves as a testament to power dynamics within aristocracy during that era. Preserved by Fundación Casa de Alba, this artwork continues to captivate viewers with its rich historical context and remarkable artistic skill. As we gaze upon it today, we are transported back to a time when ceremonies like these were held to honor those who served their monarchs with unwavering dedication.
