Edgeworth King with Books, 1815 (pastel on grey paper)

6039468 Edgeworth King with Books, 1815 (pastel on grey paper) by Sharples, Rolinda (1793-1838) or Sharples, James Junior (1788-1839); Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: A framed colour drawing on paper, showing: a full-length portrait of Edgeworth King (1807-1817) reclining against two books and with a large urn and shells nearby; the sitter looks to be about 8 years old which dates this work to about 1815; he was the son of the surgeon and Bristol School artist John King (Johann Koenig, 1766-1846) and Emmeline King (nee Edgeworth, 1770-1848); it is clear he was adored by his family, possibly as a result of his early death, as three other pastel drawings by Sharples family artists exist; this work is currently attributed to either Rolinda or James Sharples Junior, and is more likely to be by Rolinda); © Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives; Purchased 1973

EDITORS COMMENTS
This pastel drawing, titled "Edgeworth King with Books" transports us back to the year 1815. The artwork, created by either Rolinda Sharples or James Sharples Junior, showcases a full-length portrait of a young boy named Edgeworth King. At just eight years old, he exudes an air of innocence and curiosity. The composition is beautifully framed on grey paper and depicts Edgeworth reclining against two books while an ornate urn and delicate seashells rest nearby. It becomes evident that this young boy held a special place in his family's heart, perhaps due to his untimely death at such a tender age. Edgeworth was the beloved son of renowned surgeon and Bristol School artist John King and Emmeline King (nee Edgeworth). This emotional connection is further emphasized by the existence of three other pastel drawings featuring him by various members of the talented Sharples family. As we gaze upon this exquisite piece, we are reminded not only of the artistic skill employed but also of the fleeting nature of life itself. Through delicate strokes and subtle shading techniques, the artist has captured both Edgeworth's youthful spirit and his family's enduring love for him. Currently housed in the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in the UK since its purchase in 1973, this print serves as a poignant reminder that even within art lies stories waiting to be discovered.
