EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic 134 Aldersgate Street in London, circa 1879. The image, taken by Henry Dixon as part of a series documenting endangered buildings in Old London, showcases the traditional facade of this iconic structure. Despite lacking documentary evidence, it was widely believed to be the former residence of renowned playwright William Shakespeare. The photograph offers a glimpse into Victorian architecture and urban life with its charming shop fronts and bustling street scene. A prominent feature is a barber shop sign that adds character to the overall composition. This particular image has become a tourist attraction over time due to its association with Shakespeare's alleged home. Sadly, this piece of history no longer stands today as it was demolished in 1879. However, through Dixon's lens, we are able to appreciate its grandeur and significance during that era. This photograph serves as a testament to the power of photography in preserving our cultural heritage. It allows us to explore forgotten narratives and immerse ourselves in the past while reminding us of the importance of safeguarding historical landmarks for future generations.
