EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's epic poem, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". In this hauntingly beautiful wood engraving by Gustave Dore, we witness an extraordinary moment as the dead sailors rise up from their watery graves to breathe life into the ship once more. Published in 1876 by Harper & Brothers in New York, this artwork showcases Dore's incredible talent and attention to detail. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image, we can almost hear the groans and whispers of these spectral figures. Their eyes remain motionless as they work tirelessly to manipulate the ropes that propel the ship forward. It is a miraculous sight - a testament to both Coleridge's imaginative storytelling and Dore's artistic prowess. "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" tells a tale of redemption and consequences on the high seas. The mariner himself is burdened with guilt after killing an albatross, which leads him and his crewmates into a world of supernatural occurrences. This particular scene encapsulates one such event where death itself becomes subservient to their will. Drenched in symbolism and infused with eerie atmosphere, this wood engraving transports us into a realm where reality blurs with fantasy. It serves as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is always hope for rebirth and renewal – even if it comes from unexpected sources like these resurrected sailors working diligently amidst swirling waves.
