EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving showcases the majestic Stellers Sea Cow, a fascinating creature that once roamed the oceans. Created by the German School in the 19th century, this print is now part of a private collection. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring this remarkable sea cow to life. The engraver, A. Fleischmann, skillfully captured every nuance of this magnificent animal. This artwork was featured in "Die Säugetiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen" a publication by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Also known as Rhytina stelleri or Hydrodamalis gigas, Stellers Sea Cow was an enormous marine mammal that inhabited coastal waters around Alaska until its extinction in the 18th century due to overhunting. Its massive size and gentle nature made it an awe-inspiring sight for sailors and explorers alike. This illustration serves as a reminder of our planet's rich natural history and highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species like manatees today. It allows us to appreciate these incredible creatures from another era through artistry and scientific accuracy. Bridgeman Images has preserved this valuable piece of natural history for all to admire and learn from. Whether you are an animal lover, art enthusiast, or simply curious about Earth's past inhabitants, this print offers a glimpse into a world long gone but forever imprinted on paper.
