The family played a leading role in the politics of the area in the late-18th century. The family seat was at Blagdon Hall, Stannington in Northumberland. Sir Matthew White Ridley was Mayor of Newcastle in 1774, 1782, and 1791. He was also MP for Newcastle from 1794 to 1812.
