EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a trial pattern for the Waterloo Medal, created in 1815. The bronze medallion, crafted by an unknown English artist from the 19th century, is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. Although this particular design was not ultimately adopted, its intricate details and symbolism are truly remarkable. The front of the medal features a distinguished man adorned with wreaths and leaves, symbolizing victory and honor. This man is believed to be George IV, also known as the Prince Regent during that time period. Surrounding him are various male portraits representing those who fought bravely in the Battle of Waterloo during the Napoleonic Wars. The reverse side of this trial pattern can be found on another print (1268489), revealing further elements such as oak leaves and additional medallions. These designs were carefully considered but did not make it into production. As we delve into history through this image, we gain insight into both artistic creativity and military recognition. The award itself represents valor and achievement on the battlefield while showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts, we can appreciate this fascinating piece without any commercial restrictions. It serves as a reminder of our past struggles and triumphs while honoring those who dedicated their lives to protecting their nation's freedom.
