EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Treason and rebellion or the constitution the union and the laws! Which will you choose?" evokes a sense of urgency and contemplation. Created by American School in the 19th century, this lithograph captures a critical moment in history. The image portrays an intense debate between two opposing forces during a time of conflict. The poster serves as both warfare publicity and propaganda, aiming to sway individuals towards one side or another. It symbolizes the beginning of a civil war that divided America. The composition is filled with symbolism, emphasizing key elements such as the Constitution, Union, and Laws. These pillars represent stability and order amidst chaos. They stand tall against treasonous acts and rebellious tendencies that threaten to tear apart the nation. As viewers gaze upon this print, they are confronted with an important question: which path will they choose? Will they support those who seek to uphold their constitutional rights within a united country? Or will they be swayed by rebellion? Intriguingly engraved by W. W. H Davis, this historical artifact from New-York Historical Society's collection invites us to reflect on our own values and allegiances. It reminds us that every action we take has consequences – triggering either unity or further conflict. This print serves as a powerful reminder of how debates over law, loyalty, and patriotism can shape nations' destinies. Its significance stretches far beyond its artistic value; it encapsulates an era when America was at its most vulnerable yet resilient state
