This coloured chalk on paper print, now housed at the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow, UK, transports viewers to a world where nature and symbolism intertwine seamlessly. In this enchanting artwork, we witness a pelican perched upon a tree branch with its young nestled safely in their nest. The bird's beak is open wide as it feeds its offspring with selfless devotion—a powerful symbol of sacrifice and nurturing love. Burne-Jones masterfully captures every intricate detail of the pelican's feathers and expression, bringing life to this mesmerizing scene. As one explores this stunning design further, they are reminded of William Morris' influence on the arts and crafts movement during this era. The harmonious blend of nature-inspired motifs with pre-Raphaelite aesthetics creates an ethereal atmosphere that captivates all who gaze upon it.
