EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Holbein the Younger's "Allegory of Time - Design for a pendant or hat badge" created between 1532 and 1543. Measuring at just 5.5x5.5 cm, this intricate pen and ink drawing is part of The Devonshire Collections at Chatsworth. The design features a circular composition with various symbolic elements representing the concept of time. At the center, a clock serves as the focal point, surrounded by figures and inscriptions that allude to patience and waiting. The inclusion of chimes adds an auditory dimension to this allegorical representation. The attention to detail in this piece is remarkable; every scroll, figure, and inscription has been meticulously crafted by Holbein's skilled hand. The round shape of the design suggests its intended use as either a pendant or hat badge. One particularly intriguing element is the inscription "aspetto la hora" which translates to "I await the hour" in Italian.
