EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the scene after the Battle of Naseby on 14th June 1645, a pivotal moment in British history. The image is taken from "British Battles on Land and Sea" edited by Sir Evelyn Wood and first published in 1915. Created by William Barnes Wollen, a renowned artist of his time, this color lithograph showcases the aftermath of the battle. In this historic depiction, we witness an atmosphere filled with elation and triumph as Parliamentarian forces celebrate their victory over the Royalists. The soldiers are seen cheering and raising their arms in euphoria while mounted on horseback. Among them is Sir Thomas Fairfax, a prominent figure during the English Civil War. The composition beautifully portrays both human and animal elements. Horses play a significant role in this artwork, symbolizing strength and resilience amidst chaos. Their presence adds to the overall energy of celebration that permeates through every corner of the battlefield. Wollen's attention to detail brings life to each character depicted - from roundheads to troops - showcasing their jubilant expressions as they revel in their hard-fought success. This portrayal not only commemorates a specific event but also serves as a testament to human determination and perseverance against all odds. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from our private collection, it reminds us of how art can encapsulate historical moments forever etched into our collective memory.
