EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning page from the Hunterian Psalter, dating back to the 12th century. The image, titled "MS Hunter 229 f. 5r September" transports us to a village scene in medieval England. In this intricate artwork, we see two figures engaged in grape harvesting during the month of September. A woman with plaited hair stands gracefully, dressed in a slate-blue gown paired with green hose and black boots. She holds a pink wicker basket filled with grapes on her right shoulder while gathering another bunch with her left hand. Beside her, another figure is depicted wearing a red and white hood that partially conceals her head and shoulders. With careful precision, she crouches down to pick grapes using her left hand before placing them into a similar handled basket held in her right. The artist's attention to detail is evident as they depict lush green vines and trees surrounding the women. Despite their conventional representation, these elements add depth and beauty to the composition. Adjacent to this scene is an illustration of Libra - symbolizing balance - featuring golden scales suspended by a ring on the index finger of Christlike figure clothed in pink mantle over a long green robe. Overall, this exquisite piece offers us insight into medieval life through its meticulous craftsmanship and vivid portrayal of everyday activities such as grape harvesting.
