EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia-toned photograph print captures a significant moment in American history, as depicted in Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the War. The two-volume collection, dating back to 1866, showcases Alexander Gardner's remarkable work during the Civil War era. These albums provide a glimpse into the past with photographs taken inside Mathew Brady's studio. The image itself portrays scenes from various battlefields such as Antietam, Gettysburg, and Petersburg. It is a haunting reminder of the brutal reality faced by both Union and Confederate forces during this tumultuous time. Amongst the stark black and white landscape lie fallen soldiers' bodies strewn across the battlefield. As we observe this historical artifact, it becomes evident that these skeletal remains were once living individuals who fought valiantly for their respective causes. The photo serves as a testament to their sacrifice and offers insight into military history within North America.
