EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "A hospital different from the others" transports us back to 1924 England. Illustrated by Achille Beltrame, it depicts a truly unique establishment in Totteridge - a country hospital exclusively dedicated to cats. As we gaze upon this peculiar scene, we are immediately struck by the contrast between the ordinary and extraordinary. In this idyllic countryside setting, rows of outdoor cages house over 100 rescued felines patiently awaiting their turn for adoption. Women nurses can be seen tending to these precious creatures with utmost care and dedication. A young boy stands nearby, his curiosity piqued as he contemplates which lucky cat will become his new companion. The image exudes an air of novelty and compassion as people from all walks of life visit this sanctuary for animals in need. The concept of a specialized hospital solely for cats is both bizarre and heartwarming at the same time. Beltrame's intricate details beautifully capture the essence of this British village's love for its furry inhabitants. From choosing a pet to providing them with shelter, every aspect reflects the freedom of choice that defines our society. This print serves as a timeless reminder that even in times when human medicine was scarce, there were those who recognized the importance of caring for our animal friends. It stands as a testament to humanity's unwavering commitment to helping those most vulnerable among us – whether they walk on two legs or four.
