EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "GAMBIA 20" captured by Athanasios Papadopoulos, we are transported to the heart of Africa, specifically the Western Gambia village of Tanji. The image depicts a poignant scene where the shadow of an African man engrossed in his meal is cast upon the walls of a claustrophobic cookshop. The atmosphere within this eatery seems almost prison-like, with its narrow space and limited freedom for movement. As we observe the man's expression, we can sense his feelings of confinement and perhaps even defilement due to the stuffiness and mustiness that permeate the air. Papadopoulos skillfully captures not only a physical setting but also evokes deeper emotions through his aesthetic approach. The metaphoric nature of this photograph creates a dreamlike quality that transports us into another world - one filled with fantasy yet grounded in African culture, history, and civilization. This thought-provoking image invites contemplation on societal norms and challenges our perception of what constitutes a restaurant or taverna. It reminds us that experiences like these exist beyond our comfort zones; they are part of everyday life in third-world countries such as Gambia. As viewers immerse themselves in this visual narrative, they cannot help but ponder upon taste and smell – elements so integral to any culinary experience. We wonder about the recipes prepared here: dishes crafted in an authentic African way that tell stories passed down through generations. Ultimately, "GAMBIA 20"
