Quasi-War with France, 1799-1800. America sailors celebrate the victory of the USS Constellation over the French Frigate LInsurgente, off the Caribbean island of Nevis, on Feb. 9, 1799. The ships engaged in a running fight for three quarters of an hour, until the French frigate lowered her flag in capitulation, 29 French were killed and 1 American. In over two years of naval combat, the French lost 85 ships to the US, against only one loss to France (BSLOC_2019_5_31).
