Framed Print of RAF at Exercise Red Flag 2017
Pictured is an RAF Voyager tanker aircraft taking off from Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada during Exercise Red Flag.
RAF personnel took part in the worlds largest and most complex air combat exercise at Nellis Air Force Base in the United States.
Exercise Red Flag is a three-week, 5th Generation exercise that sees friendly Blue Forces compete against hostile Red Force aggressors in live and synthetic training environments, simulating air-to-air, air-to-ground and space and cyber warfare.
The training mirrors the threats and complex air defences posed by real-life adversaries, and helps participating nations better understand each others capabilities.
The RAF Voyager is based on the modern Airbus A330-200 passenger aircraft and, in conjunction with ourBoeing C-17A Globemaster IIIfleet, provides the RAF with Strategic Air Transport and Aeromedical capability.
In addition, Voyager is an extremely effective Air-to-Air Refuelling asset, which is utilised to enable a variety of RAF aircraft to operate for extended periods.
There are two types of Voyager aircraft: The K Mk2 is a two-point tanker, equipped with 1 FRL Mk32B 900E pod under each wing and the K Mk3, a three-point tanker with an additional centre line hose for larger receiver aircraft.
Very few internal changes were required to modify the A330-200 for the Air-to-Air Refuelling role. In particular, no additional fuel tanks are required and, as Voyager shares the same wing as the four-engine A340, there is a pre-strengthened location available for mounting the wing Mk32B pods. The British Army protects the United Kingdom's interests at home and abroad, providing a safe and secure environment in which all British citizens can live and prosper. © Crown copyright
