Resting T lymphocytes

Resting T lymphocytes. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of resting T lymphocytes from a human blood sample. T lymphocytes, or T cells, are a type of white blood cell and components of the bodys immune system. They mature in the thymus. T lymphocytes recognise a specific site on the surface of pathogens or foreign objects (antigens), bind to it, and become activated to produce antibodies or cells to eliminate that antigen. Specimen courtesy of Professor Greg Towers, University College London. Magnification: x 6000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of resting T lymphocytes, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope. These remarkable cells, also known as T cells, play a crucial role in our body's immune system. Originating from human blood samples and maturing in the thymus gland, they possess the extraordinary ability to recognize specific sites on pathogens or foreign objects. In this mesmerizing image, we witness the delicate structure of these white blood cells magnified 6000 times their actual size when printed at 10 centimeters wide. The vibrant colors highlight their distinct features and emphasize their significance in defending our bodies against harmful invaders. Professor Greg Towers from University College London generously provided this specimen for examination. His contribution allows us to delve into the fascinating world of biology and gain a deeper understanding of how our immune system functions. Displayed within this print is not only an artistic masterpiece but also a scientific marvel that reminds us of the complexity hidden within our own bodies. It serves as a reminder that even on a microscopic level, there is immense beauty waiting to be explored and appreciated. Whether you are passionate about anatomy, bacteriology, or simply intrigued by nature's wonders, this artwork will undoubtedly captivate your imagination and spark curiosity about the incredible mechanisms working tirelessly inside each one of us.
