Great 20th Century Explorers
The semi-rigid N-class airship Norge (Norwegian for Norway ), which was used by the Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile Expedition to fly over the North Pole, lands on a snowy field, Teller, Alaska, May 13, 1926. Bad weather forced the craft to land in Teller and not return to Norway. Norwegian Roald Amundsen and Italian Umberto Nobile differed about who should receive the credit for the flight; Nobile because he was pilot, or Amundsen because he was the head of the expedition (American pilot Lincoln Ellsworth was the son of the expeditions backer, James Ellsworth). Two years later Amundsen disappeared while searching for Nobiles ill-fated Italia expedition to overfly the pole. (Photo by Pictorial Parade/Getty Images)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of exploration. The semi-rigid N-class airship Norge, proudly displaying the Norwegian flag, gracefully touches down on a snowy field in Teller, Alaska on May 13,1926. This remarkable aircraft was utilized by the Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile Expedition to conquer the North Pole. However, fate had different plans for this historic journey. Unfavorable weather conditions forced the airship to land in Teller instead of returning triumphantly to Norway. This unexpected turn of events sparked a heated debate between two key figures of the expedition: Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile. While Nobile believed he deserved credit as the pilot, Amundsen argued that his role as head of the expedition warranted recognition. Tragically, just two years later, Amundsen vanished while searching for Nobile's ill-fated Italia expedition aimed at overflying the pole. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both their achievements and subsequent misfortunes. The image showcases not only an extraordinary mode of transport but also highlights advancements in aeronautics and engineering during this era. It symbolizes human curiosity and determination to explore uncharted territories even under challenging circumstances. Preserved through time with meticulous archival care by Pictorial Parade/Getty Images, this photograph offers us a glimpse into an era defined by scientific exploration and adventure-seeking spirits. It stands as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge amidst harsh polar climates and serves as an inspiration for future generations fascinated by discovery and innovation.
