Great 20th Century Explorers

The ill-fated semi-rigid N-class airship N1 (aka Italia ) makes a stopover at an airfield before continuing on with Italian general Umberto Nobiles second expedition to overfly the North Pole, Stolp, Germany, April 16, 1928. The Italia crashed on drifting pack ice on May 25 during its return from the Pole. Nobile was rescued when Swedish pilot Einar Lundborg arrived on June 23 but the remaining five survivors were picked up by a Soviet icebreaker, Krassin, on July 12. Lundborg, who crashed on his return to the floe, was removed by another Swedish pilot, Schyberg, on July 6. Three survivors attempted to walk to land, two of them survived and were picked up by the Krassin. One crew member died in the initial crash and six were carried away by the gas bag during the accident. The subsequent rescue attempts were the first large-scale international air-sea search-and-rescue operations of their kind in the Arctic region and resulted in the death of Nobiles former partner and rival Roald Amundsen. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the history of exploration - the ill-fated expedition of the N-class airship N1, also known as Italia, led by Italian general Umberto Nobile. The image shows the airship making a stopover at an airfield in Stolp, Germany on April 16, 1928, before continuing on its journey to overfly the North Pole. Tragically, the Italia crashed on drifting pack ice during its return from the Pole on May 25. General Nobile was eventually rescued by Swedish pilot Einar Lundborg on June 23, but five other survivors were left stranded until they were picked up by a Soviet icebreaker named Krassin on July 12. The rescue efforts that followed this disaster marked the first large-scale international air-sea search-and-rescue operations in the Arctic region. The mission claimed the life of renowned explorer Roald Amundsen and saw heroic efforts from pilots like Lundborg and Schyberg who risked their lives to save others. This print serves as a poignant reminder of both the triumphs and tragedies that come with pushing boundaries and exploring unknown territories. It immortalizes not only those brave individuals who dared to venture into uncharted territory but also highlights the incredible resilience and spirit of cooperation shown during times of crisis.
