0-6-0 tender locomotive Dean Goods No. 2430 in wartime livery, c. 1939
0-6-0 tender locomotive Dean Goods No.2430 is pictured here in its wartime livery. The tender is painted with the WD for War Department and the engine bears its War Department number, 177. In late 1939 and again in late 1940 the GWR was called upon to supply a total of 108 Dean Goods locomotives for service overseas. This lightweight but strong class of locomotive was regarded as ideal for war work so the locomotives were quickly got ready, a number of which had to be reinstated and overhauled having been withdrawn from service prior to the war. It is interesting to note that locomotive No.2430 was one of a number of Dean Goods locomotives that had already seen overseas service in the First World War

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the 0-6-0 tender locomotive Dean Goods No. 2430, resplendent in its wartime livery. The significance of this image lies not only in the locomotive's striking appearance but also in its historical context. During World War II, the Great Western Railway (GWR) played a crucial role by supplying 108 Dean Goods locomotives for overseas service. The photograph captures the essence of these war-ready machines, with the tender proudly displaying "WD" for War Department and bearing its assigned number, 177. The GWR recognized that these lightweight yet robust locomotives were ideal for war-related tasks and promptly prepared them for duty. Some had to be reinstated and overhauled after being withdrawn from service prior to the outbreak of war. Interestingly, No. 2430 had already served overseas during World War I alongside several other Dean Goods locomotives. This fact adds an extra layer of historical significance to this particular engine. Preserved at Swindon Works, this print serves as a testament to both the engineering prowess of GWR and their contribution to wartime efforts. It stands as a reminder of how railways played an integral part in supporting military operations during times of conflict
