EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases No. 2902, Lady of the Lake, a 4-6-0 Saint Class locomotive built in 1906, proudly displayed at the Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway (GWR). The Saint Class locomotives, named after saints and famous figures, were designed by George Churchward, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the GWR, and were considered the backbone of the company's main line express passenger services during the early 20th century. No. 2902, Lady of the Lake, is a prime example of the Saint Class's power and elegance. Its distinctive red liveried body, adorned with intricate brasswork and polished metal fittings, gleams in the soft light of the museum, a testament to the meticulous restoration work carried out by the dedicated team at the Steam Museum. The large, curved boiler and tall, funnel add to the locomotive's imposing presence, while the intricate detailing of the valve gear and cylinders reveal the complex engineering that lies beneath the surface. The Lady of the Lake was named after the famous steam yacht of the same name, which was owned by the 5th Marquess of Bute. The locomotive was originally numbered 2902 and later renumbered 5029 in 1941 before being restored to its original number in the late 1970s. This photograph captures a moment in time, preserving the history and engineering marvel of this magnificent locomotive for future generations to appreciate.
