Trees damaged in the Tunguska event

Damage to trees caused by the Tunguska event. In the early hours of 30 June 1908, a huge fireball was observed low in the sky over western Siberia. Shortly afterwards, an enormous explosion was heard. The explosion caused incredible damage, flattening over 3000 square kilometres of forests. The site of the explosion was near the town of Vanavara, in the Podkamennaya Tunguska River valley. It is now thought that the event (estimated equivalence 2 million tonnes of TNT) was caused by a meteoroid about 50 metres in diameter breaking up and exploding in the atmosphere, although no major fragments or craters have been found. This photo was taken in 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting aftermath of the Tunguska event, a catastrophic incident that forever altered the Siberian landscape. In the early hours of 30 June 1908, witnesses were awestruck as a colossal fireball illuminated the sky above western Siberia. Moments later, an earth-shattering explosion reverberated through the region. The devastating impact resulted in unfathomable destruction, flattening over 3000 square kilometers of majestic forests. Located near Vanavara in the Podkamennaya Tunguska River valley, this particular image showcases trees that fell victim to nature's wrath during this cataclysmic event. It is believed that a meteoroid approximately 50 meters in diameter disintegrated and detonated within Earth's atmosphere, releasing energy equivalent to an estimated two million tonnes of TNT. Astonishingly though, no significant fragments or craters have been discovered thus far. Taken in 1910, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both humanity's vulnerability and nature's awe-inspiring power. The damaged trees stand as silent witnesses to an event that forever scarred this pristine corner of our planet. As we gaze upon these remnants amidst the vast taiga forest, we are reminded of our interconnectedness with our environment and humbled by its ability to shape our existence.
