EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant Marie Curie, a renowned Polish-French physicist who made groundbreaking discoveries in the field of radioactivity. Born Marya Sklodowska in 1867, she later adopted her French name after marrying Pierre Curie. Together, they achieved a monumental feat by isolating the radioactive elements polonium and radium in 1898. Marie's exceptional contributions to science were recognized with not one, but two Nobel Prizes. In 1903, she shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel for their pioneering work on radioactivity. Then, in 1911, Marie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize solo when she was awarded the prestigious honor for Chemistry due to her remarkable discoveries. Throughout her illustrious career, Marie held esteemed positions such as chair of physics at Sevres Higher Normal School for Girls from 1900-6. Following Pierre's untimely death in 1906, she continued to excel professionally as an assistant professor at Sorbonne University before eventually becoming a full professor in 1908. Captured by Eugene Pirou—a prominent Parisian photographer—the image exudes an air of intellectual prowess and determination that defined Marie's legacy. Her tireless pursuit of knowledge and unwavering dedication to scientific exploration have solidified her status as one of history's most influential female scientists. This print serves as a timeless reminder of Marie Curie's extraordinary achievements and enduring impact on both chemistry and physics during the early decades of the twentieth century.
