Fine Art Print : Power supply experiment
Fine Art Prints from Science Photo Library
Power supply experiment
Power supply experiment. Power pack (left) and oscilloscope (right) being used in an experiment to demonstrate rectification. The oscilloscope is being used to examine the direct current (DC) from the power pack. The waveform on the oscilloscope screen is rectified alternating current (AC). The negative bit of the mains AC power supply has been converted to positive current (which is why half the screen is blank). DC supply from a battery would produce a straight line on the oscilloscope. This varying DC supply can be smoothed to a normal DC supply using a capacitor. A non-rectified AC and smooth DC supply are shown in image T194/646

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a power supply experiment in action. On the left side of the image, we see a power pack, while on the right side, an oscilloscope is being utilized to examine direct current (DC) generated by the power pack. The waveform displayed on the oscilloscope screen represents rectified alternating current (AC). The intriguing aspect of this experiment lies in its ability to convert negative bits of mains AC power supply into positive current, resulting in half of the screen appearing blank. In contrast, a battery-powered DC supply would produce a straight line on the oscilloscope. To achieve a smoother DC supply from this varying one, scientists employ capacitors. This process can be witnessed through two additional images included with this print - one displaying non-rectified AC and another showcasing smooth DC. With its focus on electricity and technology, this educational photograph perfectly captures students engaged in hands-on learning within their classroom laboratory. It highlights how experimentation and scientific exploration play crucial roles in understanding energy and electrical concepts. Overall, Science Photo Library's visually stunning portrayal effectively communicates both theoretical knowledge and practical application found within physics lessons centered around power supplies and rectification processes.
