EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment of the launch of Shuttle Columbia, Mission STS-73. On October 20,1995, at Kennedy Space Centre's Launch Pad 39B, Space Shuttle Columbia gracefully lifted off into the vastness of space. The crew of seven remarkable individuals embarked on this mission: K. D. Bowersox as commander; K. V. Rominger as pilot; K. C. Thornton as payload commander; M. E. Lopez-Alegria and C. G. Coleman as mission specialists; F. W. Leslie and A. Sacco Jr. , both payload specialists. Their primary focus during this ambitious journey was conducting experiments within the United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-2), housed in the shuttle's cargo bay. These experiments encompassed a wide range of fields including fluid physics, materials science, biotechnology, combustion science, and commercial space processing techniques. After an eventful stay in orbit for over two weeks, Columbia safely returned to Earth on November 5th, 1995—marking yet another triumph for human exploration beyond our planet's boundaries. This extraordinary photograph from Science Photo Library serves not only as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge but also reminds us of the incredible achievements made possible through manned spaceflight missions like STS-73 aboard Shuttle Columbia—a true symbol of scientific progress and human ingenuity reaching for the stars.
