Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Russian physicist

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Russian physicist, born Izhevsk, Ryazan, September 17 1857, died Moscow, September 19, 1935. Handicapped by deafness & the inadequacies of education in Tsarist Russia, Tsiolkovsky was self-educated in chemistry and physics. In 1881 he worked out the kinetic theory of gases, unaware that Maxwell had done so a decade earlier. 1895 saw the beginnings of his interest in space flight. His reputation as a pioneer of space travel rests on a series of magazine articles in 1903 on the theory of rocketry, anticipating some of the devices that Goddard was to develop. His visions included space suits, satellites and space stations
