James Watt, caricature C015 / 6706

James Watt (1736-1819). Caricature of the Scottish engineer and inventor James Watt. Watt made numerous practical improvements to the steam engine of his day. By 1790, the superior Watt steam engine had completely replaced the older Newcomen variety. His inventions included the double acting engine, where the piston is made to both push and pull (1782), and the pressure gauge (1790). He also adopted the centrifugal governor to regulate the speed of a steam engine and coined the term horsepower to describe a unit of energy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white caricature print captures the essence of James Watt, a Scottish engineer and inventor who revolutionized the steam engine during the 18th and 19th centuries. Depicted against a white background, Watt's comical yet determined expression reflects his pioneering spirit in the field of engineering. Watt's numerous practical improvements to the steam engine are highlighted in this artwork. By introducing innovations such as the double acting engine, where the piston could both push and pull, he greatly enhanced its efficiency. Additionally, Watt invented the pressure gauge and adopted the centrifugal governor to regulate speed. His contributions were so significant that by 1790, his superior steam engine had completely replaced older models like Newcomen's. Not only was Watt an ingenious inventor, but he also coined the term "horsepower" to describe a unit of energy – a testament to his scientific prowess. This portrait showcases him as an adult male with prominent features characteristic of his time period. Gary Brown skillfully captures Watt's historical significance through this monochrome illustration. The artist effectively combines comedy with technology to create a captivating pastiche that pays homage to one of Britain's greatest inventors.
