Harvey Allen (1910-1977). Portrait of the US aeronautical engineer and director of NASAs Ames Research Center, Harry (Harvey) Julian Allen, standing in front of a blackboard with his Blunt Body Theory equations. Allen is best known for this Blunt Body Theory of re-entry aerodynamics. This theory permitted successful recovery of orbiting spacecraft and led to the design of ablative heat shields that protected the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts as their space capsules re-entered the Earths atmosphere. He served as Center Director of the NASA Ames Research Center from 1965 to 1969. His techniques are still used to this day. Photographed at Ames Research Center, California, USA, in 1957
