Furnace designed by Leonardo da Vinci in the 16thC

Da Vincis furnace. Engraving of the furnace designed by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Used for distillation, the furnace has two stills (at upper left and upper right) upon it. The glass stills were designed to separate volatile components out of solutions by heating them. Highly volatile components would evaporate and not condense until they were in the tubes coming from the stills caps. As the tubes faced downwards, the fluid would trickle out and could be collected. Components with a low volatility would condense in the neck of the stills and flow back into the original solution. Da Vincis designs remained obscure until the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable furnace designed by the legendary Leonardo da Vinci during the 16th century. Known as "Da Vinci's Furnace" this engraving reveals a masterpiece of engineering and innovation. Designed primarily for distillation purposes, this furnace features two glass stills positioned at the upper left and upper right corners. The brilliance behind these glass stills lies in their ability to separate volatile components from solutions through controlled heating. As heat is applied, highly volatile components evaporate and ascend through tubes connected to the stills' caps. These tubes are cleverly angled downwards, allowing the fluid to trickle out and be collected. Meanwhile, less volatile components condense within the neck of each still before flowing back into the original solution—a testament to Da Vinci's meticulous attention to detail in his designs. Interestingly, Da Vinci's revolutionary furnace remained relatively unknown until its rediscovery in the 19th century—an unfortunate oversight considering its significance in history of science and chemistry. This historical photograph not only highlights Da Vinci's genius but also serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of scientific equipment and technology. It stands as a tribute to one man's insatiable curiosity and unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries in every field he touched—Leonardo da Vinci truly was an extraordinary mind ahead of his time.
