Early petrol locomotives

Early petrol engine. Historical artwork of early designs for an electrical generator (top left) and locomotives, using petrol as their fuel source. These were based upon the 1860 design by Lenoir, which used an electrical spark to ignite petrol in a cylinder, which then produced rotary motion by driving an axle. This was a forerunner of the internal combustion engine. Such engines were potentially more efficient than steam engines because rather than using a fuel to heat up a liquid to produce a gas, the fuel produced the gas directly. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the early petrol locomotives, a significant milestone in the history of transportation and technology. The artwork depicts various designs for an electrical generator and locomotives that utilized petrol as their fuel source. These groundbreaking prototypes were based on the 1860 design by Lenoir, who ingeniously employed an electrical spark to ignite petrol in a cylinder, generating rotary motion that propelled an axle. This revolutionary concept served as a precursor to the development of internal combustion engines. The image, sourced from Brockhaus Konversations Lexikon 1895, offers us a glimpse into the technological advancements of the 19th century. In this monochromatic engraving, we witness how these early engines paved the way for more efficient forms of transportation compared to traditional steam engines. Unlike their counterparts that relied on heating up liquids to produce gas, these petrol-based engines directly transformed fuel into gas. As we delve into this historical artifact, it becomes evident that this quartet of designs represents not only vehicles but also a testament to human ingenuity and progress. It is through such pioneering efforts that our understanding of science and engineering has evolved over time.
