Barnacle glue, SEM

Barnacle glue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the byssus (glue threads) of an acorn barnacle (Elminius modestus). This sessile marine crustacean attaches itself to a hard surface and filters plankton from the water with its feathery legs (not seen). These can be withdrawn into its hard shell when the barnacle is threatened or left out of water at low tide. The adhesive the barnacle uses to attach itself to a rock has attracted much research, as it is hoped similar synthetic glues could be created for use in medicine and other environments that call for a glue that can be used underwater. Magnification: x32 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of barnacle glue, as seen through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image reveals a section through the byssus, or glue threads, of an acorn barnacle known as Elminius modestus. These fascinating marine crustaceans are sessile creatures that firmly attach themselves to hard surfaces in the ocean. With their feathery legs, they filter plankton from the surrounding water. The adhesive properties of barnacle glue have attracted significant scientific interest due to its potential applications in various fields. Researchers hope to replicate this natural adhesive for use in medicine and other environments where underwater glues are needed. This microscopic view at 32 times magnification offers valuable insights into the structure and composition of barnacle glue. The acorn barnacles' ability to withdraw their feathery legs into their hard shells when threatened or during low tide is also highlighted in this image. It serves as a reminder of how these remarkable creatures adapt and survive in challenging conditions. Through biomimetic research inspired by nature's designs, scientists aim to unlock the secrets behind barnacle glue's incredible sticking power. As we delve deeper into understanding this unique adhesive mechanism, new possibilities emerge for creating synthetic glues that can withstand underwater conditions effectively. This photograph not only captures the awe-inspiring beauty of marine life but also represents our ongoing quest for innovation inspired by nature's genius solutions.
