A whale shark approaches a feeder boat off the beach of Tan-awan
A whale shark approaches a feeder boat off the beach of Tan-awan, Oslob, in the southern Philippines island of Cebu March 1, 2013. Tan-awan, in the southern Philippines island of Cebu, used to be a sleepy village that never saw tourists unless they were lost or in transit. Yet now they flock there by the hundreds - to swim with whale sharks, the worlds largest fish. Whale sharks are lured to the Tan-awan coastline of the Oslob district by fishermen who hand feed them small shrimp, drawing divers and snorkelers to see the highly sought-after animals, known as gentle giants of the sea. But the practice has sparked fierce debate on the internet and among biologists, who decry it as unnatural. Picture taken March 1, 2013. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken on March 1,2013, a majestic whale shark gracefully approaches a feeder boat off the beach of Tan-awan in Oslob, Cebu. Once a quiet village untouched by tourism, Tan-awan now attracts hundreds of visitors who come to swim with these magnificent creatures - the largest fish in the world. The local fishermen have discovered an extraordinary way to lure these gentle giants to the coastline. By hand-feeding them small shrimp, they create an incredible spectacle that draws divers and snorkelers from far and wide. However, this practice has ignited heated debates among biologists and internet users alike who argue its unnaturalness. David Loh's photograph captures both the awe-inspiring beauty of this encounter and the controversy surrounding it. The underwater landscape is painted in shades of blue as sunlight filters through the water's surface. The massive size of the whale shark is evident as it peacefully glides towards the boat. This image serves as a reminder of nature's power and our responsibility to protect it. It showcases both the delicate balance between humans and wildlife conservation efforts while also raising questions about ethical practices when interacting with wild animals. Whether you see it as a picturesque scene or a dangerous situation for both man and animal, there is no denying that this photograph encapsulates one breathtaking moment where humanity meets nature's wonders head-on.
