EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by Howard Burditt, a Cape Gannet gracefully soars past its colony in Lamberts Bay, a picturesque coastal village located 250 km northwest of Cape Town. The image transports us to August 17,2006, when the town faced an unprecedented challenge that threatened its main tourist attraction. When a group of seals began preying on the seabirds and wreaking havoc on their colony, the residents of Lamberts Bay found themselves desperate for a solution. In their quest to save their beloved gannets and restore harmony to their community, they enlisted the help of three unlikely heroes: a surfer, an artist, and fake gannets. The surfer brought his expertise in navigating treacherous waters to devise strategies that would deter the seals from attacking. The artist used his creative talents to craft lifelike replicas of gannets that could fool both predators and tourists alike. Together with these artificial decoys strategically placed around the colony, they aimed to protect and preserve this natural wonder. This photograph serves as a testament not only to the beauty of nature but also to human resilience and ingenuity in times of crisis. It captures both hope and determination as Lamberts Bay fights against adversity with unconventional methods. Through this visual narrative frozen in time by Burditt's lens, we witness how communities can come together creatively to safeguard what is dear while preserving their unique identity along South Africa's stunning coastline.
