EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1928, when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers to explore the picturesque town of Knaresborough in Yorkshire. The beautifully designed poster showcases a man and a woman sitting comfortably inside a railway carriage, their eyes fixed on the enchanting view outside. As they peer through the window, they are greeted by an idyllic scene of Knaresborough's charming streets and serene rivers. The artistic genius behind this masterpiece is Henry George Gawthorn, whose talent for both architecture and pictorial art shines through in his work. Gawthorn not only created visually stunning posters but also authored books on poster design and publicity. A fascinating detail about his creations was his penchant for inserting self-portraits into many of them, complete with his signature pince-nez glasses and stylish panama hat. Transported back in time by this evocative image, we can almost feel ourselves stepping into that very railway compartment alongside these two curious travelers. We can imagine their excitement as they embark on a journey filled with anticipation and discovery. This LNER poster serves as a reminder of how rail travel once connected people to new experiences and allowed them to witness the beauty of destinations like Knaresborough firsthand. Preserved by the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print captures not just an advertisement but also a glimpse into history – reminding us that sometimes it truly is quicker by rail.
