EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1988, young readers at Ravenshall School in Dewsbury are seen delving into the world of journalism. The Examiner and other newspapers have become the subject of scrutiny for these curious minds as part of their "In the News" project, led by their dedicated teacher Mrs. Janet Irving. The children, aged 14 and 15, have been immersing themselves in a wide range of papers and radio programs to gain a comprehensive understanding of current affairs. Their enthusiasm is palpable as they eagerly prepare to watch the Examiner film and create a page of work inspired by the Examiners All Yours section. Under Mrs. Irving's guidance, these budding journalists will not only absorb knowledge but also put it into practice by producing their very own newspaper using the school's computers. This hands-on approach ensures that they develop essential skills such as critical thinking, research abilities, and effective communication. This snapshot captures an era when classroom education was evolving beyond textbooks alone. It highlights how teachers like Mrs. Irving recognized the importance of engaging students through real-world projects that fostered creativity and independent thinking. Decades later, this image serves as a reminder that education goes beyond memorizing facts; it empowers young individuals to question information sources critically while nurturing their passion for learning about society through journalism – an invaluable lesson indeed!
